A substantial number of the extant Persian and Arabic manuscripts are of great significance and benefit in terms of both their literary value and their historical or geographical value. Throughout the history, the literati have enjoyed the literary value of such works and added weight to them by providing the future learners and enthusiasts for the Persian and Arabic literature with further explanation and elaboration; moreover, the historians and history researchers have considerably benefited from a wealth of information about Iran and Islam available in these works. One of the principal historical manuscripts whose literary value has been exemplary since it was put down on paper is Al-Yamīnī , composed by Abū Naṣr ʿUṭbī; this remarkable book, on which a number of commentaries have been written by literary scholars and lexicologists, is a history of the early Ghaznavid dynasty and contains the memoirs of Sultan Maḥmūd Ghaznavi in particular. The book Al-Yumnī fi Sharḥ al-Yamīnī , which is now available to all readers and researchers, is one of the major commentaries on Al-Yamīnī, which was written by Ṣadr al-afāḍil khwārizmī; in addition to its great literary value, this eminently readable commentary casts light on the historical events of the period and its informative preface and annotations add even more to its substance.
